Does your sports team need help convincing the public to give the team billions of taxpayer dollars? Call the Seidman Research Institute

The Phoenix Business Journal wrote a story on a recently released study by the Seidman Research Institute that discussed how a women's final four tournament held in the area generated a huge economic impact for the state of Arizona. Apparently, this tournament created $42.2 million for Arizona's Gross Domestic Product for Phoenix, while the State of Arizona saw a $71.5 million overall impact. However, the report appears to be missing a lot of information. The report admits to JUST using “new dollars” that Arizona may have received during the tournament. What about expenses? What about the substitute effect? Or…

San Francisco 49ers owner, Jed York, continues spending millions to sway local politicians. When will it be called out nationally?

Recently, San Francisco 49ers owner, Jed York, created “two new political action committees” so that he could sway the public into electing a 49ers-friendly mayor and city councilmen. The team handed over $645,000 and $335,000 to the committees supporting the 49ers' preferred candidates. Nobody should be surprised by this. York has spent millions on every election since 2014, the year that the 49ers' stadium was built in Santa Clara. But it still surprises me how little attention York gets for his constant attempts to destroy any semblance of a democracy.

Kansas City Chiefs relocation deal still unknown, company hired to do their economic report has questionable past

Essentially, the state of Kansas allows for lawmakers to use a “special incentive program” that was started just two years ago to fund a project like the Kansas City Chiefs. The lawmaker who wrote this law (not including language allowing for the public to vote) claims that the public doesn't need to vote since the sales tax is not increasing. I really do hope that this politician understands that while the sales tax will not increase, the money that it brought in to MANY state functions (like public education, facilities, etc...) will now be diverted to the Chiefs project.…

When will city and state leaders learn that their new sports venue will not magically increase tax revenues?

This week, the Kansas City Chiefs announced they were relocating to the state of Kansas for a brand-new $3B stadium. The term sheet agreed upon by the team and state is outlandish. Joe Pompliano (who is one of the best at sports business news) has gone over the term sheet and claims it is the “Most Lopsided Stadium Deal In NFL History” thanks to $1.8 billion in taxpayer money being included. But the details of many important parts of the deal are still unknown. For example, we still don't know where the new stadium will be located. In a…

Buffalo is struggling to limit city leaders access to the luxury suites at the Bills new stadium

Last year, the Buffalo Bills beat the Pittsburgh Steelers in an AFC playoff game. The Governor of New York, Kathy Hochul, billed taxpayers for almost $600 worth of wine and a total bill that day of $1923 and change. As the Buffalo News reported, it would eventually come out that taxpayers had paid “more than $6300” for the governor to attend four different games. According to the state and county, this luxury suite is “meant to boost economic development.” I wish someone would explain to me how this happens…in any way, shape, or form. The spokesman for the governor…
