Why are the Jacksonville Armada suddenly ghosting everyone on their promise to build a new stadium?

The Jacksonville Armada came into existence in 2015. Since its inception, the Armada has bounced around several minor league soccer leagues. However, the team seems absolutely incapable of putting together a stadium plan and sticking with it. Over the last decade, the Armada have announced multiple stadium plans. Then after a few months, the plans go quietly into the trash.

Just three years into their existence, in 2017, the Armada almost got into a legal battle with the city of Jacksonville over the location of their home matches. When the Armada became a soccer team in 2015, their ownership group signed a lease agreement with the city of Jacksonville that said that the Armada would play its first three seasons at a place called the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. The city even spent $300k on getting the field in soccer shape. However, right before the third season began in 2017, the new owners of the Armada announced that they would now be playing home games at the University of North Florida’s Hodges Stadium.

For some unknown reason, the Armada owners felt that because the team changed owners, “it would not constitute a breach or default of their lease” if they changed their home location. The city attorney disagreed, and the contract was rather clear that the home location was “binding on the successor” of the team. The city would eventually allow the team to move to Hodges Stadium.

In 2019, the former owner of the Armada, Robert Palmer, began talks to purchase 6.5 acres of land from the city for “one dollar on the condition that the Armada would build a stadium” at this location. In January 2020, the Armada “received City Council approval for (the) land option” and was all set to start building a “new soccer-specific stadium.” The city gave the team until July 2025 to build the new stadium. Then nothing for years.

In late 2023, the Armada again announced plans for a new stadium that would be ready to start building in just a few months. The team also announced that they would soon be playing in the third-level league called “MLS Next Pro.” But the expectation was that the Armada would get a new stadium built. This would allow the Armada to possibly get promoted in the future to the next league up or the MLS itself. Then nothing happened. Timelines just kept getting pushed back further and further.

In 2025, the Armada again got approval from the city to start building its new $18.2 million stadium. The owner of the Armada even pledged to move his real estate firm to Jacksonville to be near his new soccer stadium. Nothing happened. In late 2025, the Armada announced that a new owner has bought the team. The new owner claimed that “he still intends to build a stadium.” But he never gave a starting date, completion date, or timeline of when Armada would be joining their MLS Pro league. Furthermore, this change in ownership was never finalized. As of today, there is no answer to the ownership issue.

Remember that September 2026 date? Good. It passed, and nothing was done by the team to build on their stadium lot. Under the agreement signed by the team and city, if the Armada want to build a new stadium on this land moving forward, they will now have to pay the “full market price” instead of the $1 previously given to them.

As of today, the location of the future stadium sits “virtually vacant.” Who is the owner? Not sure. What league is Armada playing in? Not sure. Where will they play next year and in the future? Unknown.
